Starting with our first recording, Ya Cha Ban, in 2010, we have made the environment where we live a part of our improvisational recordings for mind fiber. The title represents how we maintain an open-ended outlook on recording itself. We strive to retain as much of the original color of any sound happening in the environment as possible, and life, for that matter. At the core, it is improvisation with everything in life. No. 237, Taolin Village, Xingshou Town, Changping District, Beijing, is a small farmhouse we rented in 2021. The courtyard sits on the outskirts of northern Beijing, near mountains, reservoirs, and orchards. After a simple remodeling, our family stayed in this small courtyard of nearly 400 square meters. In the yard there is a cherry tree, a persimmon tree, a mulberry tree, and a toon tree that keeps growing new trunks. Our favorite, of course, is the cherry tree. It produces pink or white flowers in spring and dark purple cherries in early summer. We sometimes have barbecues in early winter under the tree, which can cause it to bloom miraculously early. We hung solar-colored lights on the tree that light up every day. It is like a holiday celebration each day. We also installed bird feeders on the tree, making it a paradise for birds even when there is no fruit. Some of the birdseed landed on the ground under the cherry tree, and inexplicable plants grew, such as millet, various grains, and other weeds. In just a few years, countless memories were made under this tree. Beautiful images of the children spending their fourth, fifth, and sixth birthdays there, Li Jianhong's mother holding her hands full of cherries and smiling at her son while he climbed to the top of the tree. I also recall my mother gazing at the full moon hanging over the cherry tree after a snowy day on my father's birthday four years after his death. And lastly, the beloved cats, Amanda and Xiao Zhi, who used to walk under the shade of the flowers with their heads held high but have since left us. Time flies, and it has already been another three years since then. Airplanes pass over the yard, dead leaves fall from the cherry tree, the neighbor's dog cries and barks, and children throw stones at the iron gate. Sound is a trace of life and a part of memory. That is why keeping sounds in ones memory is important. It is the life we share.
